Open•UP Convenience

The Expert Kit includes our LeftField Mini baseplate: featuring our Open•UP mechanism that is patented and beloved in equal measure. Open the catch halfway to slide back-and-forth on ARRI standard dovetails, then open it all the way to effortlessly lift it off the mount – switching setups in seconds.

High Standards

The LeftField system also sets the FX5 to the 15mm LWS standard height: the go-to setup for many industry accessories. Mount matte boxes, follow-focus and more from a consistent rod setup - to really put the “cinema” in “cinematographer”.

Dual Quick-Release

At the end of a long shoot day, the last thing you want to do is spend hours fiddling with Hex Keys and screws. The Expert Kit comes apart in two distinct chunks: the FX5 cage, and the baseplate. You can release the camera cleanly by simply unlatching the Arca Receiver. This makes pack-down much easier, especially with a camera as compact as the FX5.

Clean Rigging

Of course, the main point of a cage is adding accessories to your rig – and in that regard, the FX5 Expert Kit spoils you for choice. Choose from your classic bolt-on mounts via 1/4" and 3/8” screw threads – each with anti-twist pin threads – or alternative mounts including MAP M4 points, QD sockets and integrated NATO rails. All safe, all secure, no compromise.

Get a Grip

The FX5 Expert Kit forms a complete Sony FX5 cage, giving you plenty of rigging real-estate without compromising on camera size. Our Right Side Plate gives you a pistol grip-style plate for comfortable handheld shooting, as well as a selection of 1/4" accessory mounts. On the other hand (literally), the NATO Wing Grip sits offset from the camera: making it easy to hold for handicam shots whilst also offering easy access to camera inputs. And of course, it is covered in those bolt-on and quick-release rigging options.

Seamless Shooting

Whatever the particulars of your camera setup, whether you are ninja-walking on a gimbal or running a full cine rig, the FX5 Base Kit is designed to be forgotten about. The cage maximises access to the camera’s buttons and inputs, with dedicated cutouts for dummy batteries, drop-in filter housings and cable management.

Part of the Sony FX5 System

The Sony FX5 Expert Kit comes with all required components. You will require a 2.5mm and 3mm Hex Key in order to assemble them.

Bottom Plate to Camera
1. Align the two mounting screws with the threads on the FX5 base.
2. Use a 3mm Hex Key to tightly secure them in place.

Top Plate to Camera
1. Align the Top Plate’s mounting screws with the corresponding threads on the FX5 body – the NATO rail should be over-hanging the lens mount.
2. Use a 3mm Hex Key to tighten the screws on the top and left side.

Top Handle to Top Plate
1. Slide the NATO clamp onto the NATO rail – it should automatically centre via the magnets.
2. Use the lever clamp to tighten the Top Handle into place.

Side Plate to Camera
1. Align the bottom screw with the indented thread on the FX5 Bottom Plate, and the top screw with the thread on the FX5’s body.
2. Use a 3mm Hex Key to tightly screw both screws into their respective threads.

Wing Grip to Cage
1. Align the bottom mounting screw with the mounting thread on the FX5 Bottom Plate – the correct screw is the one closes to the front of the camera.
2. Use a 3mm Hex Key to tighten the Wing Grip into place.
3. Align the top mounting screw with the corresponding thread on the Top Plate.
4. Use a 3mm Hex Key to secure the second screw in place.

Riser to LeftField Mini
1. Align the four M4 screws with the outer four channels on the LeftField Mini Baseplate.
2. Use a 3mm Hex Key in order to tightly screw the two together.

Arca Receiver to Riser
1. Align the screws on the Arca Base with the threads on the bottom of the Arca Receiver – the Receiver should sit with the “G” logo facing the front.
2. Use the included flathead screwdriver to secure the Receiver in place.

Bottom Plate to Arca Receiver
1. Loosen the Receiver’s lever clamp and slide the FX5 into place.
2. Re-tighten the lever clamp.

HDMI Clamp to Cage
1. Align the screw thread of the HDMI Clamp with the marked gap on the Top Plate.
2. Insert your HDMI cable and align the Clamp so that the flat base of the cable is flush with the Clamp.
3. Use the 2.5mm Hex Key to fully tighten the Clamp to the Side Plate.
4. Secure the HDMI cable in place by tightening the thumbscrew.

USB-C Clamp to Cage
1. Align the mounting screw of the USB-C Clamp with the thread on the Bottom Plate – the thread is lower down on the left side of the Plate.
2. Use a 2.5mm Hex Key to secure the Clamp in place.
